Anal Plugs

As the name implies, an anal plug is a sex toy that you insert into your anus. It consists of three parts: the bulb, which is the insertable part of the toy, a neck that acts as a bridge between the bulb and base, and a flared base that stops the bulb from getting all the way in. To use this sex toy, make sure that you’re fully relaxed and ready for the play. After that, put a generous amount of lube on the plug, then gently insert the toy in your bum.

Anal plugs come in different types, all of which have their own benefits and disadvantages. The most common type is the classic anal plugs that are usually spade-shaped and are considered the best type for beginners. There are also tail butt plugs that are recommended for those that are into roleplaying. You can also opt for vibrating anal plugs; the only difference it has with a regular butt plug is that it’s vibrating.

History of Anal Plugs

Did you know that anal plugs were used as medical devices before? Yep, these sultry toys were considered a legitimate treatment for various diseases back then.

It all started with Dr. Young’s Ideal Rectal Dilators were sold from 1893 until 1940 in the United States. Since the medical field isn’t as advanced and sex toys are still considered taboo during this period, these rectal dilators were marketed as a “medical device” that’s meant to cure constipation, acne, insomnia, and even insanity— yep, you’ve read that right. They look like mini “torpedos” made from hard rubber, and they vary in diameter from 1⁄2 to 1 inch and in length from 3 to 4 inches.

Eventually, the Food and Drug Administration has discovered these toys and exposed their lies. The production had stopped by 1940, but people who owned these dilators apparently kept recreationally using the devices. These rectal dilators then became the blueprint of the anal plugs that we’re now using for pleasure.

Care & Maintenance

Taking care of your anal plugs is pretty simple. Just make sure that you’re using the right lube and cleaning it before and after the deed.

To know what type of lubricant is suitable for your anal plug, check its main material. If it’s made with silicone, then water-based lube is the best type for it. Steer away from silicone-based lubricants as they can deteriorate the toy’s surface, making it more prone to bacteria.

As for the cleaning process, all you need is warm water and mild soap. Just place the toy in running water, apply some soap, gently scrub off the residues, then rinse it off. Unless the plug is battery-operated or rechargeable, you can pretty much submerge the plugs. If they are rechargeable (such as vibrating plugs), just check if they’re waterproof or not. You can also use a sex toy cleaner for a more convenient cleaning process. Once you’re done, dry the anal plugs, then store them inside a satin or velvet pouch.
