The word ‘soap’ is derived from the ancient Roman legend about Mount Sapo. Rain washed down the mountain and would cause animal fat and ashes to mix, resulting in a sort of clay mixture that they discovered made cleaning easier.
The first soap was made by Babylonians around 2800 B.C. and was used in the textile industry and for medical uses. Soap was quite expensive as it could only be made by a very small group of soap makers. The price of soap was reduced significantly in 1791 when a chemical process to create soap was discovered by a Frenchman named LeBlanc.
